Prevalence of intestinal parasites in a population in south of Tehran, Iran

摘要: The aim of this study was to describe epidemiologic characteristics intestinal parasites in a population south Tehran, Iran. A retrospective cross-sectional patients with suspicious parasitic infections referred the Zakaria Razi Laboratory Shahre-Ray, southern Iran, conducted from April 21, 2004 October 20, 2005. All stool samples were examined and socio-demographic informations retrieved. Of 4,371 patients, 466 (239 males 227 females) laboratory diagnosed parasites, period prevalence 10.7%. Blastocystis hominis (B. hominis) Giardia lamblia (G. lamblia) most frequent parasites. More than half aged ³ 18 years had low level educational attainment (e.g. illiterate, primary school, high school) (170/331, 54.1%). Further, majority homemakers (42.3%, 140/331) or workers (28.1%, 93/331) employed various business settings such as food industry construction. Findings showed that are still major public health challenge Iran needs be addressed. We believe education, improving sanitation conditions underdeveloped areas/communities, community involvement, supporting evidence-based practice/programs keys success preventing spread
