Fly‐In/Fly‐Out, Flexibility and the Future: Does Becoming a Regional FIFO Source Community Present Opportunity or Burden?

摘要: The resources boom in Australia has resulted considerable competition for labour, particularly remote mining areas. Shortage of skilled labour led companies to source workers from far afield, while the high incomes created by a tight market draw across country through long-distance commuting arrangements such as fly-in/fly-out (FIFO). While much recent literature focused on impacts receiving communities these commuters, less attention been given experience communities. This paper compares situation between two regional towns which commuters reside. first, Busselton Western Australia, is among several chosen Rio Tinto be second, Stawell Victoria, looking response impending closure their existing gold mine. Hence case studies offer not only insights into communities' commuting, but also comparison bottom-up approach trying establish FIFO with an example top-down sourcing. seeks highlight some development challenges encountered and solutions how might addressed future.
