摘要: Swallowing is an important physiological response that protects the airway. Although aspiration during sleep may cause pneumonia, mechanisms responsible have not yet been elucidated. We evaluated coordination between respiration and swallowing by infusing water into pharynx of healthy young adults each stage. Seven normal subjects participated in study. During polysomnography recordings, to elicit a swallow we injected distilled awake state stage through nasal catheter. assessed latency, apnea time, respiratory phase swallow, number swallows, coughing. A total 79 swallows were recorded. The median latency was significantly higher 2 (10.05 s) 3 (44.17 s) when compared (4.99 s). showed very wide interquartile range. In two subjects, result predominantly prolonged other subjects. There no significant difference time stages. presence inspiration after swallowing, repetitive coughing more frequent than awake. This study suggests as defense mechanism against impaired sleep. Our results supported physiologically fact adult individuals aspirate pharyngeal secretions
