摘要: Synchrotron infrared spectra of H[sub 2]O adsorbed on a polycrystalline gold surface have been obtained for the first time. Water was found to adsorb molecularly and associatively at low temperatures, i.e., 100-140 K. For example, 117 K exposure 0.3 langmuirs, O-H stretching vibration observed 3387 cm[sup [minus]1], which is indicative hydrogen-bonded water. Bands attributed frustrated translation were about 230 290 [minus]1]; band 817 [minus]1] assigned rotational motion. The assignments confirmed through isotopic shift measurements with D[sub 2]O. are suggestive formation (HOH)[sub n] clusters coverage; increasing coverage, an ordered multilayer icelike structure apparent. 14 refs., 5 figs.
