摘要: Technological development is often described as an evolutionary process of variation, selection and retention. Different technologies are seen variations, while the market other institutions operate a environment. It less understood, however, how variation relate in case emerging technologies. In this paper we introduce concept arenas expectations to examine relationship between processes. Expectations particular interest pre-market phase innovation, when performance, cost criteria articulated not stable. ‘enactors’ technological variations voice maintain expectations, ‘selectors’ will compare assess competing claims. We analyse work both parties study on metal hydrides for on-board storage hydrogen automotive applications. The concludes with framework ‘arenas expectations’ linchpin processes
