摘要: As a core topic in secondary school mathematics, algebra is recognized as one of the most difficult topics, which leads to learning difficulties worldwide. In Indonesia, performance an important issue. Trends International Mathematics and Science Study 2007 (TIMSS), Indonesian students’ achievement domain was poor significantly below average, i.e., 36th position out 48 countries. Two main issues therefore were addressed this study: investigation why question low student algebra, how improving domain. start address first issue, we investigated initial on linear equations variable, related inequalities, word problems. To do so, interview study, involving 51 grade VII students – who about enter VIII (13-14 year-old) carried out. The results revealed that transforming process problem situation into mathematical world vice versa, well reorganization within mathematicsand understanding algebraic expressions concerned two observed algebra. Other included application arithmetical operations different meanings equal sign, notion respectively. We then used these five categories point departure for, constituted frame reference next partial studies. investigate second designed ICT-based teaching sequence equations, tested small-scale pilot experiment, involved (12-13 from classes schools. perspective mathematization operational structural views activity respectively fruitful understand dealing with problems solving emerged study. Next, making use study results, conducted experimental 266 eight four schools, implementing approach teaching. Four applets for called Algebra Arrows, Cover-up, Balance Model, Strategy, embedded Digital Environment, experiment foster both procedural skills conceptual understanding. showed group higher (p<.01) than their peers’ control group, small medium effect size (d = 0.32). addition this, instrumentation theory proved be relationship between digital tools skills.
