Enhanced chromium adsorption capacity via plasma modification of natural zeolites

摘要: Natural zeolites such as mordenite are excellent adsorbents for heavy metals. To enhance the adsorption capacity of zeolite, sodium-exchanged samples were irradiated with 13.56 MHz capacitively coupled radio frequency (RF) argon gas discharge. Hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] was used test metal. Pristine and plasma-treated zeolite soaked in 50 mg/L Cr solution amount adsorbed Cr(VI) on calculated at predetermined time intervals. Compared untreated samples, initial uptake 70% higher granules (50 W 30 min) after 1 h soaking. After 24 h, all showed increased uptake. For a 2- to 4-month period, about 130% compared granules. X-ray diffraction analyses between treated revealed no major difference terms its crystal structure. However, an increase number surface defects observed from scanning electron microscopy images. This induced by plasma exposure played crucial role increasing active sorption sites surface.
