摘要: We estimate the effect of a teenage birth on educational attainment young mothers in Cape Town, South Africa. Longitudinal and retrospective data youth from CAPS dataset are used. control for number early life pre-fertility characteristics. also reweight our using propensity score matching process to generate more appropriate counterfactual group. Accounting respondent characteristics reduces estimates teen dropping out school, successfully completing secondary years schooling attained. Our best high school graduation by ages 20 22 -5.9 -2.7 percentage points respectively. The former is significant at 5% level, while latter not statistically significant. Thus, there appears be some 'catching up' mothers. find only limited support hypothesis that heterogeneity birth, depending actual age first birth. By 22, none or significant, regardless specific which occurred. Despite this, we do evidence does correlate with reduced expectations. proportion who report an expected final greater about 15 lower than matched set non-teen mothers, but this manifest amongst girls whom know will subsequently become point after these expectations measured.
