By the early 1900s, bear population was estimated at <12 individuals, Mississippi closed hunting in 1932. However, continued by 1980 suitable 20% (20,234 km2) of historic levels (101,171 km2) with decline continuing. Although abundance is currently unknown, a recent increase occurrence reports documented reproduction suggests may be increasing. There been 21 reported nuisance complaints since 2006, which 7 were apiary damage. Additionally, 31 mortalities 1972; 80% human caused.
