We impressed frequency and severity of lung involvement in these evaluated them respect their manifestations AIDS. The 13 men two women had a mean age 32 years. Ten active intravenous drug abusers use 8.1 All presented profound weight loss, ten nonproductive cough, eight significant dyspnea. Fourteen 15 Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) at time our evaluation. Chest radiographs 14 showed no uniform pattern which was predictive PCP. However, all tested widened alveolar arterial oxygen gradient (mean: 59 mm Hg) correlated well presence most common finding infection: PCP readily diagnosed by transbronchial biopsy patients, five found have disseminated Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare often developed after "recovery" Therapy for trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (TMP/SMZ) unsuccessful patients; four TMP/SMZ failures responded pentamidine. Mortality 100 percent who more than one year, 70 those less year. Despite some symptomatic responses therapy infections, mortality seems be unaffected appropriate this disease.
