Although use bibliometric studies predates eld, need mathematically statistically quantity quality published work did not arise until 1960s. This was attributable exponential growth scientifi c publications resulting from culture ‘ publish or perish 3,4 that overwhelmed different fi elds, identify top research. With development many indices over years, are increasingly becoming a political tool among scientists policymakers 5 extent they can be important decisions regarding appointments 6 promotions funding.
