Ranking university departments using the mean h-index

摘要: Ranking of universities has lately received considerable attention. However, ranking departments would give a higher resolution picture the distribution quality within each university. In this work Hirsch (h) index faculty in Greek Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, and Physics was calculated using Web Science mean value used to rank them. This refers research performance department thus is most relevant its doctoral program. The results seem highly meaningful. If performed on pan-European basis, such rankings could spur healthy competition provide strong motive for meritocratic hiring practices. Technical difficulties possible extension approach social science humanities are discussed.
