摘要: Forestry operations in jarrah forests of south-western Australia use two types selective logging, gaps which remove 85-95% basal area and shelterwoods 40-60% area. These create considerable lengths forestry edge (edges between logged unlogged forest) each year, but their impact on the avifauna forest is unknown. Changes bird density were examined along edges created by using a BACI design experiment. Bird densities estimated 1-ha plots that surveyed three times per season, seasons both before after logging. There was no evidence effects at community level; overall species richness did not changes edges. Scarlet robin (Petroica multicolor) abundance increased significantly gap shelterwood edges, relative to controls. Apart from probably spurious increase red-winged fairy-wrens (Malurus elegans), other showed significant change also difference responses despite removing more than shelterwoods, suggesting response may be threshold dependent, rather increasing with intensity logging operations. Comparisons studies examining suggest observed this study are short-term nature. The limited because practices instead clear-felling. Studies literature indicate pattern likely true for many ecosystems.
