摘要: Abstract The mode of action the antibiotic psicofuranine was studied using E. coli B. inhibition bacterial growth by only transitory and cells were able to overcome it after an extended lag phase. inhibitory could be reversed guanine its derivatives; other purines pyrimidines inactive as reversing agents. Cells growing in presence excreted xanthosine into medium. measurements purine synthesis from glycine-1-14C whole under influence showed a decreased isotope incorporation with simultaneous increase radio-activity xanthine. No effect on adenine observed. same results obtained when conversion hypoxanthine-8-14C measured inhibited cells. In psicofuranine, xanthine-8-14C both inhibited. These that xanthosine-5'-phosphate guanosine-5'-phosphate.
