摘要: There is a considerable body of ecological information relevant to the management tropical forests, but in practice, little this used. It demonstrated how ecology helps understand forests and forest change argued that there an urgent need for wider appreciation utilisation current knowledge. Forest managers must take holistic, long-term landscape-level view, itself inevitable. Familiar concerns relating silviculture canopy disturbance are considered then, neglected biology tree pollination seed dispersal risks associated with animal loss. Increasing threats from fire, exotic species habitat fragmentation identified. Finally, difficult balance between timber production conservation related values discussed. The overview, its mixture common sense more subtle insights, may be translated into beneficial actions. Considerable progress attainable, requires collaboration ecologists managers. Initiatives seek reform practices tropics require sound basis better address many challenges facing modern forestry these regions - such is, large part, already available use. Illustrations given as improved. Fundamental recognition knowledge crucial currently too often ignored, rapid possible if ecologists, foresters others can find ways work together directly.
