摘要: We examined the occurrence of carabid beetles along a forest successiongradient in central Finland (forest age classes: 5, 10, 20, 30 and 60years since clear-cutting). Species richness carabids was higherin two youngest classes, while no clear differences were detected incarabid abundance. The high species young, open sites due toinvasion open-habitat species. Many absent from or scarcein young became gradually more abundant towards older forestage classes. catches indicated drastic decrease assemblage-levelchange concert with canopy closure, i.e. 20–30 years afterclear-cutting. Some specialists poor dispersal ability may facelocal extinction, if proportion mature decreases further theremaining stands become isolated. recommend that, whileharvesting timber, connectivity between is ensured, standsare maintained close (a few tens metres) to each other matrix qualityis improved for by green tree retention.
