Global software development in the freeBSD project

摘要: FreeBSD is a sophisticated operating system developed and maintained as open-source software by team of more than 350 individuals located throughout the world. This study uses developer location data, configuration management repository, records from issue database to examine extent global development its effect on productivity, quality, cooperation. The key findings are that allows round-the-clock work, but there some marked differences between type work performed at different regions. effects multiple dispersed developers quality code productivity negligible. Mentoring appears be sometimes associated with living closer together, ad-hoc cooperation seems fine across continents.
