摘要: Normal mucociliary flow is a significant defense mechanism in the prevention of acute sinusitis. We have undertaken study to examine early sinus mucosal and changes that occur response infection. Twenty rabbits were evaluated for 5 days after an obstructed maxillary was inoculated with either Streptococcus pneumoniae, Hemophilus influenzae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, or sterile saline solution. Data collected included measurements ciliary beat frequency, quantitation ciliated cell losses, electron microscopic observations. Results demonstrate statistically (p 0.55). Control animals likewise demonstrated no loss cells from epithelium; however, dramatic losses mucosa experimental groups observed. These occurred at different rates, depending on infecting organism, but all infected > 86% decrease number viable sinusitis duration. conclude corresponding disruption normal occurs exposure pathogenic organisms predisposing factor development
