Lia Won't: Agency in the Retrospective Pregnancy Narratives of Low‐Income Brazilian Women

摘要: RESUMEN O rapido declinio das taxas de fecundidade no Brasil, uma media 6 bebes nascidos vivos por mulher em 1965 a 2,5 1996, occorreu num contexto qual o aborto induzido e ilegal esterilizacao nao foi autorizada pelo Codigo Etica Medica antes 1997. No entanto, mais um quarto brasileiras, unidas solteiras, escolhem ate os 30 anos idade. Esta pesquisa analisa narrativas gravidez brasileiras baixa renda, com 25 50 idade, finalidade entender como elas representam sua propria atuacao (agency) outros, relacao decisoes sobre gravidez. O protocolo analise agencia (agency), tal ela representada nas narrativas, comprende tres categorias analiticas: do outro, gravidezes planejadas; recuperadora–quando reassume controle meio ou da aceitacao maternidade; antecipada, decisao incide futuro, esterilizacao. Brazil's rapid fertility decline, from six births per woman in to 2.5 occurred context where abortion is illegal and sterilization sanctioned (until 1997) by the medical code of ethics. Still, more than one-quarter Brazilian women, both single stable union, choose age 30. This research analyzed pregnancy narratives low-income women aged 25–50 understand how they represent their agency, agency others, relation decisions. Three analytical categories comprise my method for examination as represented narrative: proximal (the others) unintended pregnancy; recuperative agency—reassuming control with or embracing motherhood; pre-emptive forward-acting through sterilization.
