摘要: What enables some employee ownership firms to overcome the free rider problem and motivate employees improve performance? This study analyzes role of human resource policies in performance companies, using survey data from 14 companies a national sample employee-owners. Between-firm comparisons 11 ESOP show that an index policies, nominally controlled by management, is positively related reports co-worker other good workplace outcomes (including perceptions fairness, supervision, worker input influence). Within-firm three firms, exploratory results survey, employee-owners who participate involvement committees are more likely exert peer pressure on shirking co-workers. We conclude understanding how when works successfully requires three-pronged analysis of: 1) incentives gives; 2) participative mechanisms available workers act those incentives; 3) corporate culture battles against tendencies ride.
