摘要: Finding efficient ways to manage the threat of invasive species helps make most limited resources. Different management actions reduce impact invasions differently: preventing invasion eliminates impacts entirely, surveillance can facilitate early detection and eradication, removing individuals future impact. Few studies have examined trade-off between all three facets management. Using a simple model island invasion, we find how resources should be allocated each action minimise total cost We use case study black rat (Rattus rattus) on Barrow Island, Western Australia. The optimal amount invest in depends effectiveness action, magnitude caused by different stages invasion. If pest is currently absent, it more cost-effective prevent through prevention or surveillance. already widespread, sometimes give up rather than attempting eradication. This provide useful decision support identifying trade-offs inherent candidate strategy, thresholds that alter strategies, parameters for which need information.
