摘要: Obesity is now a major public health problem in both developed and developing countries. In the UK over 16% men 17.5% women are obese, an increase of more than 100% since 1980. However, interventions to prevent treat obesity hampered by inadequate understanding aetiology this condition. The present paper considers current state knowledge regarding causes obesity, including some genetic, metabolic, behavioural environmental factors which influence energy balance. comprises Nutrition Society Medal Lecture focuses particular on research carried out at MRC Dunn Centre Cambridge. It argues that despite decades intensive there relatively little evidence genetic or metabolic defects explain majority cases human obesity. Instead we must look and/or may be underpinning epidemic
