摘要: Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance In South Africa, tuberculosis (TB) caused by Mycobacterium is the most commonly notified disease and fifth largest cause of mortality, with one in ten cases TB resistant to treatment some areas. Many plants are used locally traditional medicine treat TB-related symptoms. Aim study The aim was summarize currently available knowledge on African symptoms, antimycobacterial efficacy plant-derived extracts compounds. Materials methods uses for respiratory ailments were collated tabulated. activity tests chemical constituents several these others using different target organisms summarized. Results Almost 180 symptoms documented. About 30% have been tested efficacy, mostly against fast-growing, non-pathogenic species. Conclusions plant species alleviate TB, interesting leads originated further inquiry following vitro evaluation. However, much work remains be done systematic assessment anti-TB local pathogenic species, both vivo .
