摘要: Leptocephalus larvae of elopomorph fishes are a cryptic component fish diversity in nearshore and oceanic habitats. However, identifying those leptocephali can be important illuminating species richness region. Since the Deepwater Horizon oil spill 2010, sampling offshore epi-, meso-, upper bathypelagic depth strata northern Gulf Mexico resulted 8982 identifiable specimens leptocephalus or transforming juveniles, representing 90 recognized established an additional 36 distinctive morphotypes not yet linked to known described species. Leptocephali account for ~13% total collected A new morphotype Muraenidae is described. DNA barcoding selected has further expanded determination several morphotypes.
