Home Sharing and People With Intellectual Disabilities: A Qualitative Exploration

摘要: Home sharing is a fast-growing residential option in British Columbia (BC), Canada; yet little empirical research exists specific to home sharing. In BC, defined as living situation when one or more adults with an intellectual disability share another person unrelated family who paid provide and, at times, additional support needed. The authors report the findings of qualitative study exploring and factors that contribute quality Guided by interpretive description, method, individual interviews participants’ experiences were conducted 68 individuals (22 ID, 33 providers, 13 members). Constant comparison was used analyze data. Key perceived instances successful included (1) finding good match between ID provider, (2) engaging proactive planning, (3) ensuring effective supports maintain sustainability promotes balancing independence for individual, (4) being attuned relational dynamics among all stakeholders. have implications implementing policies practices pertaining conclude emphasis should be put on flexible appropriate address person's changing needs where relationship facilitates individual's healthy lifestyle, well-being, independence, valued social roles, inclusion.
