摘要: Metallothioneins (MTs) are ubiquitous low molecular weight cysteine-rich proteins characterized by high affinity for d10 electron configuration metals, including essential (Zn and Cu) non-essential (Cd Hg) trace elements. The biological role of these ancient well-conserved multifunctional has been debated since MTs were first discovered in 1957. Their main hypothesized functions are: (1) homeostasis Zn Cu; (2) detoxification Cd, Hg; (3) free radical scavenging. This review will focus on unconventional animals, those not traditionally studied veterinary medicine but increasing interest this field research. Living different environments, animals represent an incredible source physiological biochemical adaptations still partly unexplored. study metal-MT interactions is great clinicians researchers working medicine, food quality endangered species conservation.
