Randomized Controlled Trial of Cognitive–Behavioral Group Therapy for Irritable Bowel Syndrome in a Medical Setting

摘要: Standard medical treatments have not been effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients. Though individualized cognitive–behavior therapy is an empirically supported treatment option, cognitive–behavioral group (CBGT) has yet to be established as alternative in a randomized controlled trial. This study compared the efficacy of 10-session CBGT with home-based symptom monitoring weekly telephone contact (SMTC) IBS, extending previous quasi-experimental research this area. Twenty-eight refractory IBS patients, evaluated and referred by gastroenterologists using Rome criteria, participated study. symptoms, psychological functioning, health-related quality life were assessed pre- posttreatment, at 3-month follow-up. patients reported significantly more gastrointestinal (GI) improvement than SMTC on posttreatment global measures had reduced daily diary pain scores Based MANOVA, there was significant distress comparison These improvements also maintained Reductions GI distress, improved health related may contribute less behavioral avoidance, disability, care utilization
