摘要: Acropora palmata populations have experienced steep declines over the past 30 years. Although numerous culprits are recognized, their relative contributions to decline poorly quantified, making it difficult prioritize effective conservation measures. In 2004, a demographic monitoring program was implemented in Florida Keys (USA), aimed at determining importance of various stressors affecting A. palmata. A subset randomly selected colonies within 15 fore-reef plots tagged and surveyed three four times per year 7 Colony size, live tissue, prevalence disease, snail (Coralliophila abbreviata) predation, physical damage other conditions were assessed each survey. The estimated effect condition causing recent mortality ranked, together, these parameters used attribute population-level tissue loss associated with condition. addition, all new study counted annually order track trends total colony count abundance. Between 2004 2010, population has shown more than 50% area from main conditions: fragmentation, disease predation. Approximately half this occurred during catastrophic 2005 hurricane season which recovery been minimal. Meanwhile, abundance gradual throughout study. Snail predation most prevalent However, ranked third attributed loss, behind breakage that season, disease. Thermal bleaching not observed Because continues outpace recruitment growth, intervention ameliorate losses manageable threats including could result substantial buying time for abatement less tractable such as climate change
