摘要: Background:Risk information from health care providers is relevant to and used in nearly all medical decisions. Patientsoftenmisunderstandtheirrisks,yetlittleisknown abouttheriskperceptionthatpatientsderivefromriskcommunications with providers. This study examines patients’ risk perceptions following communication withhealthcareprovidersduringgeneticcounselingabout the risks of breast cancer BRCA1/2 mutations. Methods: A prospective, longitudinal was conducted October 2002 February 2004 women who received genetic counseling. The completed a survey before their counseling telephone interviewintheweekafterthecounseling.Mainoutcomemeasuresincludedchangefromprecounselinginriskperception accuracy postcounseling perception (relative actual communicated). Results: total 108 agreed participate study. women’s were significantly lower than precounseling (breast cancer: 17%, P.001; mutation: 13%, P.001) but higher communicated 19%,P.001; 24%,P.001). Accuracy not mutation perceptionwasassociatedwithprecounselingworry(P=.04), even after adjusting for trait anxiety (P=.01).
