摘要: Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) are now commonplace on many academic and corporate campuses. As "Wi-Fi" technology becomes ubiquitous, it is increasingly important to understand trends in the usage of these networks. This paper analyzes an extensive network trace from a mature 802.11 WLAN, including more than 550 access points 7000 users over seventeen weeks. We employ several measurement techniques, syslogs, telephone records, SNMP polling tcpdump packet sniffing. This largest WLAN study date, first look at large, consider geographic mobility. compare this taken after network's initial deployment two years ago.We found that applications used changed dramatically. Initial was dominated by Web traffic; our new shows significant increases peer-to-peer, streaming multimedia, voice IP (VoIP) traffic. On-campus traffic exceeds off-campus traffic, reversal situation WLAN's deployment. Our indicates VoIP has been little wireless thus far, most calls made wired network. Most last less minute. We saw greater heterogeneity types clients used, with embedded devices such as PDAs mobile clients. define metric for mobility, "session diameter." use show have different mobility characteristics laptops, travel further roam points. Overall, were surprisingly non-mobile, half remaining close home about 98% time.
