摘要: Objective To evaluate currently available data in the published literature to answer question of whether laser scanning imaging is a sensitive and specific tool for detecting macular disease when compared with current standard technique slit-lamp biomicroscopy or stereoscopic fundus photography. Methods Literature searches conducted December 2004 August 2006 retrieved 370 citations. The Retina Panel members selected 65 articles panel methodologist review rate according strength evidence. Of reviewed, 6 provided level I evidence, 9 II 50 III A rating was assigned studies that reported an independent masked comparison appropriate spectrum consecutive patients, all whom had undergone both diagnostic test reference standard. objective comparison; study performed set nonconsecutive patients confined narrow individuals (or both), standard; spectrum, but not been applied patients. unobjective, unmasked, independent; positive negative tests were verified using separate standards; inappropriate Results There are high-level use quantify thickness and, thereby, edema diabetic retinopathy examine hole. lower-quality evidence on other diseases macula. insufficient compare different instruments. Conclusions can accurately reliably retinopathy. optical coherence tomography provides additional information clinical examination used Laser important helpful patient management by allowing serial quantitative measurements. Although further needed develop optimal testing strategy these modalities, sensitive, specific, reproducible diagnosing therefore, likely be useful managing result edema.
