摘要: Saliva is important for the maintenance of oral health and also plays an essential role in a number gastrointestinal functions. Consequently, patients with reduced salivary secretion changes their saliva composition are more susceptible to dental caries, infections mucosal lesions often have symptoms dry sore mouth, burning itching mucosa, difficulties chewing swallowing foods, impaired sense taste, difficulty speaking problems acid reflux. These distressing consequences hypofunction significant negative impact on quality life general status. Several diseases medical conditions as well medications used treating them associated gland (objective evidence diminished output) xerostomia (subjective sensation mouth). In autoimmune like Sjogren’s syndrome, dysfunction largely related structural glands endocrine metabolic disorders mainly pathophysiological that affect formation saliva. Other autonomic outflow pathway involving innervation, central nervous system salivation centre. This chapter reviews systemic xerostomia.
