摘要: Abstract Environmental indicators must have a predictable relationship with stressors to be of value in ecological assessments. We evaluated the information provided by commonly implemented monitoring as means assessing level impact experienced coastal lagoons New South Wales, Australia. Existing data for environmental variables were correlated independent estimates catchment disturbance. There few relationships between (particularly water chemistry) and nutrient loads land use. Data from NSW catchments compared analogous published northern hemisphere studies it was clear that stressor up one two orders magnitude smaller NSW, potentially explaining lack recognised indicators. Our study has highlighted importance using range assess trends condition an estuarine ecosystem, particularly where levels are not great. Using quality sole determining lagoon simply inadequate lagoons. recommended outcome such algal abundance (macro micro) turbidity most likely show interpretable patterns at low moderate nitrogen loadings (
