摘要: Abstract Though sustainable development is a relatively recent addition to the public lexicon, concern that resource depletion may threaten welfare of future generations dates back at least Thomas Malthus and other classical economists writing nearly two centuries ago. Today debate over this threat not only continues, but seems more polarized than ever. In one school are concerned, often ecologists scientists engineers, who contend earth cannot for long continue support current anticipated levels demand oil exhaustible resources. opposing unconcerned, economists, claim with equal conviction help market incentives, appropriate policies, new technology can amply provide society's needs indefinite future. That intelligent informed individuals remain so divided on such an important issue humanity after years surprising. The explanation, in part, appears lie very different paradigms adopted by groups coupled quite contrasting views beneficence technology, policy marketplace. competing lead outlooks human condition turn recommendations policy.
