Association of consanguinity with congenital heart diseases in a teaching hospital in Western Iraq.

摘要: OBJECTIVES To study the association of consanguinity as a risk factor for congenital heart diseases (CHDs). METHODS Patients with suggestive signs CHD admitted to Al-Ramadi Maternity and Children Hospital, Al-Anbar Governorate, Iraq from January 2009 2010 were subject diagnostic investigations. Case data includes: name, age, gender, cause admission. Parents residence, degree consanguinity, history family recurrent CHDs. Three controls one case (3:1) selected compare their cases. Odds ratio was used measurement other variable risks on occurrence. RESULTS The cases 86. Selected 258 non-CHD The most recorded subtypes ventricular septal defect (VSD), atrial (ASD), tetralogy fallot (ToF). Consanguinity found in 78% 43.3% controls. First cousin comprised 66.2% 35.6% all marriages. significant factor, more affecting VSD ASD than ToF subtypes, while parental age infant gender not factors. CONCLUSIONS Consanguinity proved be CHD. Further social education consanguineous marriages this tribal population is needed reduce prevalence these morbid mortal anomalies.
