摘要: While railroads figure prominently in U. S. history and culture, their environmental impacts are often overlooked. Here, I describe situations where operation maintenance of a section transcontinental railroad Montana, USA, resulted high mortality grizzly bears (Ursus arctos), threatened species under the Endangered Species Act, proposed avalanche control measures conflicted with preservation mandates Glacier National Park. A unique public/private partnership was created to work towards effective solutions problems. The successful decreasing bear rates, but less so finding consensus on how best reduce risk. suggest that collaborative partnerships, such as developed here, will be essential solving future problems associated railroads.
