摘要: The polysaccharide capsule of Streptococcus pneumoniae is the dominant surface structure organism and plays a critical role in virulence, principally by interfering with host opsonophagocytic clearance mechanisms. target current pneumococcal vaccines, but there are 98 currently recognised serotypes protection strictly serotype-specific. Widespread use these vaccines driving changes serotype prevalence both carriage disease. This chapter summarises knowledge on its regulation pathogenesis, mechanisms synthesis, genetic basis for differences, provides insights into how so many structurally distinct capsular have evolved. Such will inform ongoing refinement vaccination strategies.
