摘要: Water availability is often described as one of the main drivers phenology tropical dry forests but experimental studies to identify cues triggering phenological changes are few. In a greenhouse trial, we exposed seedlings thirteen origins, seven from West and six East Africa, respectively, Adansonia digitata L.(baobab) well-watered control treatment water withholding in combination with exposure three different daylengths (11.5, 12.0, 12.5 hr). Responses were measured terms meristematic activity, number leaves, height growth followed over 6.5 months. Multi-level mixed-effects statistical models used analyze how environmental inter-population variables affected behavior. Flushing was influenced by daylength lowest degree activity observed short treatment. Daylength also leaves through an interaction regime. The regime all interactions origins. Seedlings subjected stress had higher initially lower numbers than continuously watered plants. Height plants fastest or at par water-stressed plants, depending on origin. Origins Africa tended have their found be less African There no signs significant differences between origins response photoperiod. conclusion, baobab show opportunistic behavior, setting when available, larger days long. We discuss results factors for adaptation specific conditions site
