Empowerment and engagement of SHGs against RTI/STI in Karnataka, India: an interventional study

摘要: Background: Reproductive Tract Infections (RTIs) including Sexually Transmitted (STIs) are ‘silent’ epidemics and recognized as public health problem rank second the cause of healthy life lost among women reproductive age after maternal morbidity mortality in developing countries. Development use IEC material along with active participation by community ensures delivery appropriate information knowledge to people which turn empowers them make informed decisions about their health. Methods: This was a ‘Multi-centric action research demonstration study’ empower engage Self Help Groups (SHGs) creating awareness sustaining interest through lesson plans regarding prioritized problem, required interventions access for syndromic recognition RTI/STIs. As an intervention, series workshops were conducted help pre-developed material. 400 households (200 from each intervention control sites) SHG interviewed baseline endline each. Results: Intervention found effective form significant improvement level RTI/STI, correct white discharge, capability identify symptoms RTI/STI seeking behavior respondents. Conclusion: study provides experience feasibility, efficacy impact education point out that cost-effective strategies prevention needed information, education, change.
