摘要: The behavior of Rydberg atoms near metal surfaces in the presence an external electric field has been examined theoretically to evaluate their potential use as experimental probe electron tunneling processes at surfaces. These ab initio calculations reveal strong hybridization that leads a shift and broadening levels depend sensitively on atom-surface separation strength applied field. A range fields exists, however, for which ionize sufficiently large separations that, even image charge attraction, resulting positive ions can escape surface provide experimentally observable signal. \textcopyright{} 1996 American Physical Society.
