Drugs and Protected Areas: Coca Cultivation and Social Acceptance of Bahuaja-Sonene National Park in Peru

摘要: Cocaine is extracted from coca: a native bush the Amazon rainforest. Coca mostly grown in remote areas to avoid government intervention, and it has been increasingly cultivated inside protected (PAs). The effects of coca cultivation on preservation PAs are largely unknown. This research uses panel data (2006–2008) total 684 farmers evaluate influence growing acceptance PAs, using as case study farmer community located within buffer zone Bahuaja-Sonene National Park (Peru). All coffee growers some complement their income with production. area not subject forced eradication activities. were analyzed probit models covariance matrix correction for cluster errors by year, without interaction effects. results suggest that more likely state positive opinion about PA than non-coca growers. may reflect fact need extensive land order approach economic benefits obtained who also grow coca.
