摘要: Experiments I and II were designed to differentiate between alternative interpretations of the contrast effect. Experiment examines rejects hypothesis that effect is specific rating scales, since also occurs when subjects are asked make CDmparative judgments. leads rejection purely semantic (i.e., situations in which verbal labels applied attitudes); write items would be endorsed by people with whom they agree or disagree, much more extreme for those disagree than agree. In fact, who::n not people, reason most often given being too extreme. III, IV, V demonstrate differences so clear-cut such attitude statement writing could used as an indirect measure attitude. Judges able categorize writers' attitudes rather accurately, but accuracy was no greater explained them it not. The implications Df these findings intergroup conflict discussed, particularly implication a positive feedback will lead exacerbation group differences.
