摘要: Treated wastewater effluent containing endocrine-disrupting chemicals is discharged into the coastal waters of Southern California Bight (SCB) daily. The present study investigated changes in indicators reproductive health and environmental estrogen exposure hornyhead turbot (Pleuronichthys verticalis) near outfalls. Fish were collected from discharge areas, farfield stations, a reference location SCB to examine spatial temporal patterns. Orange County outfall site younger less sexually mature than fish other sites. sex ratio was skewed some sites as well Dana Point site. However, no consistent pattern over time. Low-level induction vitellogenin frequently observed male all sites, suggesting widespread estrogenic compounds, but did not appear impact function there incidence gonad abnormalities (ova-testis). Analysis historical trawl data indicated that populations are either increasing or stable SCB; thus, adversely impacting abundance. Additional research needed determine cause response whether source compounds consequence contamination ongoing sources representative baseline characteristic this species. Environ. Toxicol.
