摘要: We describe how a midwave infrared photonic integrated circuit (PIC) that combines lasers, detectors, passive waveguides, and other optical elements may be constructed on the native GaSb substrate of an interband cascade laser (ICL) structure. The active building blocks used, for example, to fabricate on-chip chemical detection system with sensing waveguide evanescently couples ambient sample gas. A variety highly compact architectures are described, some which incorporate both detector into cavity defined by two high-reflectivity cleaved facets. also edge-emitting configuration optimizes stability minimizing parasitic feedback from external elements, can potentially operate lower drive power than any mid-IR now available. While ICL-based PICs processed serve illustrate various configurations, many proposed concepts apply equally quantum-cascade-laser (QCL)-based InP, integrate III-V lasers detectors silicon. With mature processing, it should become possible mass-produce hundreds individual same chip which, when singulated, will realize extremely inexpensive package.
