摘要: Samples of raw and treated sewage were collected from several treatment plants as the liquid expressed cheesecloth swabs exposed to flowing for 24 48 hr. This sampling technique has been valuable detection bacterial (2) virus pathogens (3) that may occur intermittently in sewage. It was ob served these swab expressions con tained enteroviruses bacteria two four times more often than comparable catch samples (4). Sev eral also obtained. The volume expression approximately 0.1 1; samples, either 0.4 or 4 1. All concentrated on Dowex 1 resin (3), eluted, with antibiotics diethyl ether reduce fungal contaminants, stored a dry-ice chest. eluates added 0.5-ml amounts mono layers monkey kidney epithelium tissue had grown days 4-oz bottles. inoculated cultures rinsed 199H solution one-half hour later over laid nutrient agar containing neutral red (5). They incubated at 33 ?C examined daily plaque formation until degenerated. Virus presence confirmed by propa gating salt diffusate plaques tube tissue. Viruses identi fied serologically neutralization tests. A few tested bottle cul tures FL amnion cells (6). densities estimated number formed, cor rected total sample. results are plaque-forming units (PFU) 100 ml expression. sample cal culation follows:
