摘要: Summary Subaerial explosive volcanism contributes substantial amounts of material to the oceans, but little is known about impact volcanic ash on sedimentary microbial activity. We have studied anammox communities in deep sea sediments near volcanically active island Montserrat, Lesser Antilles. The rates and denitrification were measured using 15N isotope pairing incubation experiments, while 16S rRNA genes used examine community structures. higher sediment containing lower accumulation surface sediments, lowest activities found with highest deposit. gene analysis revealed presence ‘Candidatus Scalindua spp.’ sediments. diversity bacteria was observed Overall, this study demonstrates that deposition has negative impacts activity community. Since may account for up 79% N2 production marine ecosystems, periods extensive Earth history had a hitherto unrecognized nitrogen removal processes.
