摘要: Immunofluorescence assays for marine ammonium- and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria were used to assess the diversity of nitrifying isolated from environments. The antisera show relatively broad specificity, in that each reacts with several strains same physiological type as strain which antiserum was prepared. do not, however, react any differing type. Seventy percent 30 unidentified ammonium-oxidizing isolates tested reacted one or both produced strains, 8 9 1 more 3 nitrite oxidizer used. Ammonium- enumerated samples taken a depth profile (to 750 m) Southern California Bight by immunofluorescence two ammonium oxidizers oxidizers. Average abundances types nitrifiers 3.5 × 105 2.8 cells liter−1, respectively. Nitrifiers constitute 0.1 0.8% total bacterial population these samples.
