Downstream Offshoring and Firm-level Employment

摘要: When engaging in offshoring, firms do not only import intermediates they used to produce in-house, but also previously sourced from non-affiliated domestic suppliers. This leads a negative demand shock for the latter that may affect employment. Prior empirical re- search has so far neglected this channel through which offshoring We label 'downstream offshoring' and develop novel measure capturing its extent firm given upstream industry. According our estimations representative sample of Belgian manufacturing over 1997-2007, downstream robust effect on employ- ment.
