摘要: Determining the actual phylogenetic diversity of unicellular coccoid algae, and developing a biologically appropriate classification system for them, pose challenges. We studied morphological series algal strains identified as Nephrodiella spp., Ellipsoidion parvum , Neocystis spp. By determining sequences 18S-ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 rDNA region we showed that represent just two genotypes; differences in ITS2 genotypes, including one compensatory base change (CBC) helix II, suggested they may be considered separate species. then employed geometric morphometrics to evaluate extent among strains. This analysis revealed degree variability is higher same genotype than between genotypes. Our results thus suggest all only closely related cryptic species trebouxiophycean which as brevis and mucosa . Two previously described species, originally heterokont alga, vischeri are junior synonyms N. discuss our findings case taxonomic inflation general, yet somewhat neglected, aspect current taxonomy algae.
