摘要: With a view to findout suitable method for carrageenan extraction from Kappaphycus alvarezii, detailed investigation was made on quantitative and qualitative estimation of carrageenan subjected different physical chemical treatments. The dried material presoaked in KOH heated 5 hours at 900C precipitated with propanol gave the maximum yield of 59.4 % viscosity 25.25 cps. In Ca(OH)2 treatment, the was almost similar that treatment but very low (9.45 cps). gel was found be brown colour when treated NaOH milky white Ca (OH) 2. KOH gel thick, translucent high viscosity. Pretreatments seaweed with NaOH, 2 followed by pressure-cooking showed relatively higher of carrageenan, viscosity, clarity texture were poor. Clarity of obtained KOH- methanol compared other treatments. The extracted material frozen overnight and thawed, less rigidity. present study shows that treatment gives better quality gel.
